The Language of the Railroad
Around the same time a secret code for talking was needed, America built their first railroads. They added to "Underground" part to the name meaning secret. Because of the similar names, they often used the same titles when talking about people of the Underground Railroad. Passersby would only think the slaves were talking about the new railroads rather than escaped slaves.
The people leading the slaves to freedoms were called conductors like the people that ran the trains. Safe houses were often called stations like the train stations the trains stopped at and the owners of the house station masters. The slaves traveling to freedom were often called passengers like the passengers on a train.
