The Travel to the StatesSlaves were brought by large ships across the Atlantic. They were put in dark, cramped spaces in the bottom of the ships. The slaves were chained together and forced to lie on hard, old wooden planks. The slaves not allowed to stand or walk. Slaves that became ill were thrown overboard. An estimated total of one to two million slaves died on the voyage to the Americas.

Welcoming PartyThe slaves that made it across were sold on public auctions. Slaves were separated from families and friends. Sold to different owners in different sates. By the 1800s, most of the salves were sent to work on the Southern plantations. Life on the Southern plantations was hard and the work was even harder.
