Abolitionists
Abolitionists believed slavery wrong and fought to change the Fugitive Slave Act law. Some helped slaves to escape, others sheltered
escaped slaves. Many free slaves were also abolitionists. Abolitionists developed a loose system of safe houses, trails and secret codes for slaves to follow. This was called the underground railroad. Workers in Underground Railroad skilled in hiding slave and
transporting them. Thousands of people aided the Underground Railroad. Some gave money for food and clothing. Others went south to guide slaves North. Some opened their homes to fugitive slaves.
Different jobs in Underground Railroad:
Agent: helped slaves escape by giving clues, money, or other help
Stationmasters: took escaped slaves into their homes (which were called stations) to hide them
Conductors: guided escaped slaves on their journeys
Underground Railroad workers had to be very clever to get information to the slaves.
