Fugitive Slave Act of 1850
Many slaves tried to escape. However, this was made illegal by the Fugitive Slave Act. If abolitionists were caught they could be punished. Under law, escaped slaves could be captured and returned to their owners. Even if they reached northern states, not safe. If caught, sent back to owners and punished severely. Despite this, many still tried to escape. They believed it better to seek freedom and risk being caught than to stay
